Born in Britain to Fijian parents and with Indian roots, Sam’s quest to reconnect with his ancestral past in India was a monumental challenge. Armed only with a faded photograph and little else, Sam’s journey was an exploration of identity and heritage that led him to uncover his grandfather’s house, a moment of connection for his father and a milestone in his personal journey.
 
But Sam’s story doesn’t stop with the physical discovery of a home—it’s about understanding who we are and where we come from. Throughout his presentation, Sam will reflect on his struggle with belonging—Canadian, British, Indian, or Fijian—and how his journey led to profound insights about embracing a blended cultural identity. His session will inspire you to tackle obstacles, persist through challenges, and, most importantly, discover your true self through the lens of cultural exploration and storytelling.

Sam Thiara is a community activator, educator, and storyteller, dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others. Recognized for his tireless work, Sam received the Governor General’s Sovereign’s Volunteer Medal and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal, among other honors. For over 20 years, Sam has worked with more than 45 not-for-profit organizations, helping them establish strategic visions, engage stakeholders, and support community-driven initiatives. His passion for personal and professional development, combined with his belief in the power of storytelling, has inspired countless individuals to reflect on their journeys and build their own autobiographies.
